How it happened
SciLabs was founded in 2007 by Brooklyn musicians out of our own need for reliable and comfortable practice spaces. Our frustration with unresponsive landlords, excessive price increases and badly maintained buildings caused us to take matters into our own hands and build the standard of practice space we wanted to rehearse in. Our first space opened on the Williamsburg/Greenpoint border that year, followed by a South Williamsburg location in 2009. Those facilities are now closed but our newest Greenpoint location opened in 2019, followed by our Ridgewood location in 2021.
For anyone interested in art and creative spaces, our sister company BQC Spaces can help.
You can expect the following standards from every SciLabs building:
Air conditioning, heat and wifi included, no extra fees or surprise price increases.
Sound proofed rooms with double layers of 5/8 sheetrock, insulation on every surface and green glue applied to all adjoining walls.
Secured steel doors, security cameras monitoring the entire building and exterior and unique door codes for individual entry.
Fast response to any of your questions, requests for repair or assistance of any kind.
We choose renewable energy options for all of our facilities.
SciLabs Greenpoint
Opened in 2019, our Greenpoint location is minutes from the Nassau and Greenpoint Ave G stops. There are thirty rooms of varying sizes, from small drum rooms to very large practice spaces, all built to SciLabs standards. For enquiries into availability, contact us here.
SciLabs Decatur
Our newest facility is minutes from both the Halsey St L and Wilson Ave M stops. This facility is split between band rehearsal spaces and mixing and production rooms, separated by a highly treaded and sealed wall. Our largest building yet, 34 spaces of all sizes are available for music rehearsal..
Our production and mixing roos have a limited number of rooms solely for production purposes (no band rehearsals are allowed in this area). Separated from the practice space by a heavily soundproofed wall with a significant air gap (to specifically increase soundproofing of bass transmission), all aspect of construction (walls, air gaps, ducting) have been elevated far and beyond a traditional practice space or DIY studio. Rooms are sized from a very small mix room to 200sf+ suites. Availability is very limited.
We are happy to be the new home of Civil Defense Studios, a long time recording studio associated with numerous Brooklyn bands and musicians.
